When you think Southern California
you typically don't think snow, but if you travel just
two hours east of Los Angeles you find yourself at Big
Bear Mountain in the San Bernardino National Forest
near Big Bear Lake. At almost 8,900 feet, every winter
it snows, and when more powder is needed, 5 additional
feet can be delivered through a 5 million dollar snowmaking
system.
Also, nearby is Snow Summit Mountain
another ski resort with free style parks and multiple
lifts around 7,000 feet. If you need a change of pace,
Big Bear Lake, which is 7 miles long and 23 miles around,
offers additional activities, and the main town of the
same name is a picturesque mountain village. Here you
can, also, spend your summer days boating with friends
and family along with many other water sports such as
windsurfing and jet skiing.
Bear Mountain will blow your mind
this season with its gigantic "All-Mountain Freestyle
Park." The legendary Snow Summit park staff, that
became famous for transforming ordinary trails into
freestyle masterpieces (voted #1 overall terrain park
by Transworld Snowboarding two years in a row), will
now be turned loose all over Bear Mountain and have
more terrain to work with then ever before. Expect to
see not only the world's most progressive freestyle
park and halfpipe system, but also a revolutionary new
philosophy in park design.
Snow Summit is still the place
where you can link turns on rolling groomers, attack
heart-pounding steeps or try your luck in the freestyle
park. But this year Summit will focus its operations
more toward mainstream skiers, snowboarders, and families
with children. This new plan doesn't mean Snow Summit
will completely lose its appeal to the freestyle scene.
By continuing to build the world famous top-to-bottom
Westridge Park (with beginner through advanced terrain
features and jibs) Summit still offers one of the best
freestyle opportunities in all of North America. The
Family Park will also remain as popular as ever with
two runs dedicated as "Fun Zones" to include
small jumps and rolls for children and beginners.
