Nestled in the northeastern
portion of the Adirondack wilderness of New York State,
among the mountains and heavy winter snows, lies Lake
Placid, site of the Olympic Winter Games of 1932, where
the United States, despite being amidst the great depression,
won major medals against 17 competing countries, and
the 1980 Olympic Games including the legendary "Miracle
on Ice" hockey game. Today, the Olympic Regional
Development Authority preserves the historic landmarks.
Nearby Whiteface Mountain gives
skiers a chance to show off. For experts, The Slides,
hundreds of feet of treeless sheer rock face atop the
East's greatest vertical drop, offers the ultimate challenge.
Intermediate skiers can take a try at Whiteface's 3-mile
run, especially, maintained to assure the best. Beginners
don't worry, because 1/3 of the mountain trails are
designed for you. They didn't forget snowboarders either,
because Whiteface Mountain has long been home to some
of the best alpine boarding in the East. And freestylers
have been catching major air in the terrain park for
years. Nearby Gore Mountain also offers skiing activities.
Activities abound everywhere at
Lake Placid, so if you are looking for a winter vacation
with plenty of skiing and other exciting Olympic venues
then Lake Placid is it. Lake Placid Toboggan Slide,
located on Parkside Drive, is a 30' high converted ski
jump trestle sending toboggans down ice covered chutes
onto frozen Mirror Lake and then traveling to over 1,000
feet on the frozen lake surface.
